A rare, brass, Egyptian artillery shell case (possibly from the early 20th century-Egyptian wars) finely and heavily hand-etched with lotus flowers (seshen) intertwined with papyrus reeds. The lotus was commonly used in art as a symbol of Upper Egypt. It was often shown with its long stems intertwined with papyrus reeds (a symbol of Lower Egypt) as a representation of the unification of the two lands. Provenance of this piece of trench art and Egyptian revival/Art deco: Cairo antique shop. Throughout history, the allure of ancient Egypt has exerted a particularly profound influence on the decorative arts, igniting numerous resurgences of Egyptian ornamentation. Egyptian motifs would become an intrinsic component of the Art Deco design vocabulary, a dominant style in the decorative arts until the mid-1930s. One of the most recognizable examples of Egyptian influenced Art Deco can be seen in the design of the Chrysler Building in New York. Dimensions: 14 inches high (35.5cm); 3.75 inches diameter at the base (9.5cm). Condition: very good, appealing piece of metal art with normal time patina. Interior is raw, unfinished, with original soot. Bottom has original caliber numbers of the shell case. Interested buyers are highly encouraged to ask all necessary questions before purchase. Thank you.
