Japan’s rhythmic gymnastics team, nicknamed Fairy Japan, is a gold contender at the Tokyo Olympics. Taking silver at the 2019 world championships demonstrated that the team was a world-class powerhouse, but that came after years of struggle. The team’s slump was broken by Yamasaki Hiroko, a leading gymnast in the 1980s, who helped the team build this new strength over 17 years.
