Beautiful pair of antique porcelain figurines of grape-pickers, no doubt hard at work for a local winery in France. Samson ware, with gold anchor pseudo-marked to Chelsea. Dated to the 19th century. Produced by Samson, Edmé et Cie of Paris, figurines such as these bear pseudo marks as Samson began his career by making service and set piece replacements in the late 1830s. At this point in their early history, before Samson became a name in and of itself, such reproductions were their top-of-the-line goods. The true magnificence of Samson emerges when a Chelsea replica becomes more valuable than the original. In art, It is well known that in the midst of the 19th century, the moment came when Samson replicas surpassed their models. “Great men, the most original”, as American painted John Sloan said, “borrowed from everybody”. And Samson’s borrowing from the finest British porcelain cemented their position in art porcelain history. Lady is 15.5 cm in height Man is 16 cm in height Great condition, the right hand of the lady is restored, it appears glued at the waist, the left hand has chips to the tips of the fingers, losses on the leaves of the grapes, part of the bag is chipped off. The man has chips to the tips of the fingers on both hands and small losses to grape leaves, otherwise well preserved.
