The Versace Spring/Summer 2018 show ended with a bang: the original Versace supermodels Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Carla Bruni, Claudia Schiffer and Helena Christensen stormed the catwalk wearing suitably sexy golden dresses, arm-in-arm with Donatella herself. All platinum hair and sky-high stilettos, this was the Italian designer’s way of celebrating 20 years as creative director of the powerfully sensual empire built by her brother Gianni; an empire built on mad prints, figure-hugging dresses fit for a goddess, light-reflecting gold and silver and audacious, sheer materials that dared to promote an image of the ideal women. These were clothes designed for desire, by a fashion figure as charismatic as Karl Lagerfeld or Jean-Paul Gaultier, both out of the immediate spotlight but instantly recognizable, Donatella used her energy and passion to keep Gianni’s dream alive. Today, she has nothing more to prove: Versace has remained a veritable weapon of mass seduction.
